The Jewish/Hebrew Stuff…

Why The Sudden Fascination?

Maybe you have noticed the “movement”….the recent fascination with Hebraic/Jewish culture and such things as the Feasts and the Sabbaths. This has been labeled as a cult by many mainstream ministers and Bible teachers. Its followers have been accused of putting themselves back under the law and crucifying Christ anew. People have been ridiculed for “trying to be Jewish” (my own family members included). Perhaps even you have been warned to stay far away from this group that has supposedly fallen from grace.

I would just like to suggest that this “movement” is Biblical. Perhaps it is a prophecy being fulfilled in front of our eyes. It is no accident. It is not an end-times deception. It is however an end-times movement. I submit to you a few verses that suggest that what we see happening is decreed by the Creator Himself.

In the 16th Chapter of Jeremiah, we read of the plan of God to wholly restore Israel. We know this only happens in the end of days. In verse, 19, we are given this prophecy…“O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.”

Many are questioning their mainstream church that has left out the details ingrained in the physical commandments that God asked His people Israel to follow. Where has this knowledge been all of my life? Why have I not been taught the history, and the meaning, and the fullfillment of the Feasts and the Sabbath?

In Psalms, we read: “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD. All the families of the nations will bow down before Him.” Psalms 22:27

And in Isaiah: “In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.” Isaiah 2:2

The 8th Chapter of Zechariah also speaks of the restoration of Jerusalem. Verse 23 tells us: “Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.”

This verse essentially says that in the last days, men from every nation will take hold (be strengthened) by the skirt (this is the word for the wings of the Jewish prayer garment to which tzitzits are attached) of the Jews and say “We want to walk in fellowship with you. We hear God is in fellowship with you”(Super quick verse mapping :)) If you aren’t familiar with tzitzits, go here.

One other reference comes from the book known as Jubilees. This is not a canonical book according to the Catholic Church (who decided which books would be included in our Bible). However, this book was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls along with the other scriptures, was quoted by early church fathers, and is still considered canonical by certain Jewish denominations. In the early chapters, we read of the history of the Jews/Hebrews in these verses from Jubilees Chapter 1. “

"For they will forget all My commandments, [even] all that I command them, and they will walk after the Gentiles, And many will perish and they will be taken captive, and will fall into the hands of the enemy, because they have forsaken My ordinances and My commandments, and the festivals of My covenant,And I will hide My face from them, and I will deliver them into the hand of the Gentiles for captivity, and for a prey, and for devouring, and I will remove them from the midst of the land, and I will scatter them amongst the Gentiles. And they will forget all My law and all My commandments and all My judgments, and will go astray as to new moons, and sabbaths, and festivals, and jubilees, and ordinances."

Then, in the 23rd chapter of Jubilees, the destruction of the world is prophecied. And then, in the middle of this chaos, we read verse 42: “And in those days the children will begin to study the laws, and to seek the commandments, and to return to the path of righteousness.”

According to Wikipedia, the Hebrew Roots movement began emerging as a distinct phenomenon around 1996 or 1997. It has gained much attention and following in the last 5 or 6 years. There is now a Christian Hebrew Roots movement as well. I won’t go into the beliefs or teachings of either. Nor do I claim affiliation with either movement. I am, however, in this prophetic, end-time movement of God to call His people back to His Word. He is doing something. It cannot be a coincidence that people are suddenly drawn to these details that modern Christianity has largely ignored. The depths of spiritual meaning interwoven within just the Feasts is astounding. I encourage you to explore the idea. I will post a Mini Book (a crash course if you will) in the next few days that covers the Feasts.

Notes on the book of Jubilees: Between 1947 and 1956 approximately 15 Jubilees scrolls were found in five caves at Qumran, all written in Hebrew. The large number of manuscripts (more than for any biblical books except for Psalms, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, Exodus, and Genesis, in descending order) indicates that Jubilees was widely used at Qumran. A comparison of the Qumran texts with the Ethiopic version, performed by James VanderKam, found that the Ethiopic was in most respects an accurate and literalistic translation. Considered canonical by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church as well as Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews),
