Who Were Jesus/Yeshua’s Brothers?

#TINK (Things I Never Knew)

Jesus’s brothers….

One of Jesus/Yeshua’s brothers that we are familiar with is Jude and one is James.

Jude from the book of Jude…full name Judas/Judah…Ioudas in the Greek… Yehudah in Hebrew.

👉NOTE: There was no such thing as a letter J until the year 1524 A.D.👉 The “I” in both of these names replaced the “Y” of the Hebrew names.

James, from the book of James, even though his real name was Jacob.🤔(Read more about this below)

James is actually Iakóbos in the Greek text…same as Iakób…Yaaqob in Hebrew. James is actually Jacob. So read this verse with the original names.

“Jude/Judas/Ioudas/Yehudah the servant of Jesus Christ/Yeshua Messiah, and brother of James/Jacob/Iakóbos/Iakob/Yaaqob.”

Jude 1:1

And then…

“Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James (Iacobos,Jacob) and Joseph and Simon and Judas (Ioudas, Jude)?”

Matthew 13:55

So the New Testament books of James and Jude were written by Jesus’s real brothers…not simply brothers in the faith.

James/Jacob became the leader of the Jewish Christians, and by them he was surnamed James the Just, the first overseer (or bishop) of the church at Jerusalem down to the year 62 or 63 (according to Hegesippus in Eusebius). This is the same James that issued the final decision in the discussion about the Gentiles in Acts 15. Simon, one of Jesus’ other brothers, became the 2nd bishop of Jerusalem following James. Just interesting things to put in your Bible margins to keep in mind when reading and studying these books.

The Book of James??

The New Testament book of James should actually be the book of Jacob….Jesus had a brother named Jacob (like his grandfather before him) but not James.

Some say it is just a translation error. Others say that the King James’s, the same one that initiated the King James Version of the Bible, just wanted a book named after him 🙄 and had the book of Jacob renamed James….after him.

Either way, you might want to make a note in your Bible about the very Jewish book of Jacob (because Jesus was Jewish) and the New Testament books written by our Messiah’s brothers.
